Hey everyone, hope all your projects are going smoothly! Anyways, I figured I would post up a some of the sketches and research I was doing on my own this past week. I'm a big fan of drawing loosely in pencil on 4 x 6 index cards, then reconfiguring it on a larger sheet of paper with a grid attached to my light boxes. Scanning that in, cleaning things up in SketchBook Pro or Photoshop, maybe taking a detour into Illustrator and back to Photoshop for paint. My kitchen counter's a battlefield right now as you can see.
As some of you liked the pothead lion (Lenard) I drew quickly in class, let me explain how I came up with it. Surprisingly, a lion cartoon with a marijuana leaf mane does not exist yet according to various Google image searches. One of my ideas was spoofing the failed cereal by Post called CRISPY CRITTERS (obviously into Crispy Chronic or Chronic Critters) instead of the Cocoa Puffs idea. This cereal featured a pompous lion (Linus) but the cereal itself failed in two stints in the '60s and the '80s. So maybe, with marijuana being legalized in a few years - to my estimation - Post would rebrand it and cater it to the adult stoner market that already indulge in junk food. Just trying to justify my rationale of making this whole druggy cereal thing with the throwback '60s design...
...But I'm having problems, with this whole print ad from a magazine portion of this project.
I went to Barnes and Nobles the other day for a couple of hours, and the only thing I found remotely close was some Archies comic magazine. I've been having a hard time finding a magazine that would feature a vintage cereal ad. At this point, I might have to slide my cereal ad into a marijuana mag like High Times or Weed World, as kid/retro magazines are surprisingly sparse. But then, I dunno if that makes sense other than the weed connection.
Any suggestions for a mag?
Otherwise, I just might wind up nuking this all to hell anyways and maybe do something else.
I already have been creating backup designs since last week, just in case I might hit a road block. Plan B would be a "For Your Considerations" Oscars/Annie Awards print ad with an accompanying movie poster for an adult animation aimed at children. I would slide it into this weeks Entertainment Weekly/Empire/Animation Magazine (this magazine in particular is loaded with these "For Your Considerations" ads for films like Rango and Rin Tin Tin). With my digital cinema background, I think I might be able to make it work since the majority of the designs are in sketched out loosely already (not pictured here though.) So I don't think I'll have a problem choosing an idea and getting the print ad and poster done by tuesday.
For example, taking a G-rated like affair like last summer's WINNIE THE POOH and spoofing it into a hard R sequel in the vein of THE TOWN, DRIVE or something (i.e. the POOH-FATHER II with Winnie as Michael and Piglet as Fredo in the boat by the lake in the end of Godfather II, POOH-FACE - although the Scarface poster has been done to death-, the POOH-SPENDABLES with the whole gang - Eyore, Rabbit - as the Expendables, and so on). Again the rationale is that in this day and age of Computerized Animation films, that it's becoming harder and harder for traditional animated movies to flourish. So like any Disney exec would do (besides whoring out retread films from the '90s into 3d), they'd combine forces with a Tarantino or Scorcese to spice up the stagnant 2d market.
Okay, I think I wrote enough. Below is the stuff I had intended for the cereal project (but due to my problems above - this will probably be thrown in a shoebox somewhere):
