Advertising Spoof Ad
January 30, 2012
For this project, I chose to spoof McDonalds. Everyone knows McDonalds to be one of the biggest fast food chains in America, if not the entire world. McDonalds advertisements are very simple, not complex, but very easily distinguished. They are everywhere and very recognizable.
I chose to spoof the McDonalds advertisement that shows a hand painted with the McDonalds logo in the rock on gesture. The text for the advertisement is very simple and says “Rock’n’fries.” Very simple, but very clever. I have seen the ad in both print ads and billboards.
For my spoof of this ad I wanted to do something just as clever yet along the same lines. It is well known that Americans in general are more obese than citizens of any other country or nation. So, I chose to use an obese man’s stomach to paint just like the hand. Ironically and easily, I was able to find an image of an obese man with no shirt on holding both a McDonalds French fry box and what looks to be a burger of some sort. I felt that this image was more suitable and allowed for options to play with having both the burger and the fries.
When I first found the picture of the obese man, it had lines and words all over it that I had to edit out. After I edited all of that out, I used a fry box with McDonalds logo and fit it to his stomach and lowered the opacity so that his features would show through the image to look like paint. After I fit it to his stomach I erased the parts that I did not need. For the logo in the top left of the image it says McFries, Grab Yours-so I changed it to say McFat, Show Yours. I also chose to add something to spoof the sandwich. I added the 100% Real Angus Beef Logo but changed it to say 100% Real Anus Beef.
For my social media piece I chose to do something that is familiar to most of us here in Chicago. I chose to use the underground train station advertisements that they place on the walls. I found an image that had many posters that hung throughout the station. I chose to place my piece in the first poster board and then I found another McDonalds spoof ad, so I placed that in the second poster space. I dirtied up the pieces a little bit and then thought it looked good.
I feel like my spoof of McDonalds is very obvious and makes sense. It isn’t hard to understand that fast food is not the healthiest choice out there. McDonalds is one of the worst choices when deciding on what kind of fast food to eat. Deep-fried foods, greasy pieces, and extremely high calorie counts. I wanted to portray the idea of how McDonalds is so greasy and unhealthy. I wanted to show the obese side of American society and the obsessive behavior that Americans have over fast food.
Great stuff!
